MSS-091-The North American Francophone Podcast

Header imageEpisode 091-February 1, 2020

This episode looks at a new Franco-based podcast, Claire-Marie Brisson’s North American Francophone Podcast. Many episodes present to genealogists the social history that affected our ancestors’ daily lives.

The North American Francophone Podcast

Claire-Marie and I discussed the following:

Claire-Marie began a podcast, the North American Francophone Podcast, during her fourth year of her PhD as a way to share all the tidbits she discovered during her research. She also enjoys when her listeners share their perspectives with her.

Claire-Marie grew up in a household that spoke French, although as an adult, she had to work at improving it.

Genealogists will enjoy the social history presented in many episodes of the North American Francophone Podcast. Here are some of the topics discussed:

Episode 1: Cooking in French Canada
Claire-Marie uses very early cookbooks to look at the types of foods our ancestors ate and how they prepared them.

Episode 2: First Attempt at Cooking Recipes from an 1840 French Canadian Cookbook
Claire-Marie tackles three recipes from an 1840 cookbook. She posted the soup recipe (and perhaps others in the future) throughout her social media (see below).

Episode 3: Giving Voice to Maine’s Acadian Music – An Interview with Robert Sylvain
Claire-Marie interviews Robert Sylvain who is translating lyrics of Acadian music from his grandmother’s notebook.

Episode 5: «Y fait frette!» – Adapting and Staying Warm in North America
This episode covers exactly what it says—how did our ancestors stay warm in the challenging Canadian climate?

Episode 6: “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” – Franco-American Holiday Traditions
Claire-Marie explores some of the Christmas and New Years Day traditions in Franco households.

Claire-Marie has many plans for the future of her podcast, such as episodes on cultural histories, with authors of books on French-Canadian and French-American history, and more food history!

TRM2020

We’re in the process of signing up people for our Trois-Rivière/Montreal 2020 tour in August of this year. We’re over half-way there. You can hear about all the wonderful places we’ll be visiting in episode 90, and there are links in the show notes to many of these places.

We always get a few couples to sign up for these trips. If they’re lucky, both spouses are genealogists. But often, the genealogist spouse drags the non-genealogist spouse along for the ride. Now these places are beautiful and you don’t have to be a genealogist to appreciate them. But if your spouse says, “Aw, honey, why don’t you go by yourself. You’ll have more fun without me,” rest assured that this is the trip for you!

You won’t be traveling alone. You’ll be traveling with family, because we’re all cousins. And because we plan and interact with each other ahead of time in the private Facebook group, you’ll feel like you know many fellow travelers personally before we even head out. If you live outside the New England area and need to fly in, Fred, the tour director, will help you out every step of the way.

So if you’ve always wanted to travel somewhere where you can walk in the footsteps of your ancestors and see what they saw, consider joining us. Everything you need to know is at maplestarsandstripes.com/trm2020.
