MSS-037-Canadian National Censuses, 1871-1921

Maple Stars and Stripes fleur-de-lis logoHow we genealogists LOVE census records! Lucky for us, more and more of these wonderful documents are digitized and available online.

In this episode, I’ve gathered together, from all corners of the internet, information about online census records from the post-Confederation era. This includes national decennial censuses from 1871 until the most recently released 1921, as well as a few other censuses conducted during this time period.

At the end of the podcast, I’ll tell you how to get a free PDF copy of the research guide ‘Canadian National Censuses, 1871-1921’ with links to every census as well as census aids.

In Language Tip #37, we’ll look at the very strange French spelling of the English sound (or pretty close) /OY/. If your American family had an OY in their surname, you’ll be surprised at how you will find it spelled in Québec!

If you have found Acadian lines tying into your French-Canadian ones, consider joining myself and Lucie LeBlanc Consentino for our Acadian Ancestral Tour 2016. You can check out the itinerary and instructions for signing up, then sign up here. There are about ten seats left on the bus, and we’d love to have you take up one of them.
